The Fort La Carnale of Salerno is a cavalry tower built on the coast, near the mouth of the river Irno. This stronghold was part of a defense system that was built starting in 1563 in order to defend the city from Saracen raids, specifically, the Carnale tower was built around 1569 by the entrepreneur Andrea Di Gaeta of Coperchia and originally stood on the sea.
The name derives from a massacre of Saracens that took place in the year 872 around the promontory on which the fort stands. The building is also called "the Polveriera", since in the nineteenth century it was used by the Bourbons as a military ammunition depot.
Currently it has been completely renovated with two levels equipped with halls for exhibitions and cultural exhibitions, lookout points and restaurants with lift. It is part of a tourist complex on the coast in the center of Salerno, together with tennis facilities, hockey and the municipal indoor swimming pool.
